1. Review the State Requirements

In order to renew your insurance license, you must complete the required continuing education hours for the lines of insurance that you are licensed in. All of the hours must be completed and reported prior to your license renewal date to avoid a lapse in your license.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Total Hours

24 hours biennially

8 hrs biennially (for those who held a continuous active license for 25 years as of 10/1/2008. (Bulletin 13-10)

Compliance Renewal Date

Renewal date is the last day of the licensee's birth month, biennially.  Effective 1/1/2020, Producers must have CE credits completed no later that 30 days prior to the expiration date of the license.

You may also need to take specific courses or earn specific credit types to renew your license. These course completions will count toward the total hour requirement.

LINE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

Courses must be taken in the line held. LH/PC combined licenses must complete 25% in each line (a minimum of 6 hrs LH & 6 hrs PC).

For All Licenses:

Ethics
3 hrs - Producers must complete 3 hrs of Ethics as part of the total requirement.  No more than 3 hours of Ethics can be completed in a renewal period.

For Life & Health Producers:

Annuity Suitability
4 hrs - Producers must complete a one-time 4-hour Annuity Suitability Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products.

Long-Term Care
8/4 hrs - Producers must complete an initial 8-hour Long-Term Care (LTC) Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating Long-Term Care products/policies. After completing the initial requirement, producers must complete a 4-hour ongoing LTC training, due on the completion date of the 8-hour training, every 24 months thereafter.

Long Term Care - CE Requirement
2 hrs - Licensees wanting to sell LTC insurance must complete 2 hrs of LTC biennially.

For Property & Casualty Producers:

Flood
2 hrs – All Property/Casualty and Personal lines producers must complete a 2-hour course on NFIP Flood Insurance Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating flood products and then every renewal period thereafter.

There are also additional rules about how the course hours can be applied.

CARRYOVER HOURS:

Carryover hours are not allowed.

COURSE REPETITION:

Courses may not be taken more than once in a reporting period. If a course is taken during two consecutive renewal periods, there must be at least 6 months between completion dates.

If you meet any of criteria below, you may be exempt from the continuing education requirements.

EXEMPTIONS:

  • Individuals holding a Limited License (Credit, Portable Electronics, Self-Storage, Travel)
  • A licensee who holds only the Title line of authority AND is a Maryland attorney (admitted to practice before the Maryland Court of Appeals).
  • An actively licensed insurance producer who is age 70 and above as of April 30, 2013.  The license must be continuously active to maintain CE exemption.  (The cutoff birthdate:  April 30, 1943)  (Bulletin 13-07)
  • Non-residents who are compliance in their home state (although exempt from the 2 hr LTC CE requirement, non-resident must comply with the LTCP training for MD or another state meeting the NAIC LTC Model training outline)

2. Register for and Complete Courses

Once you have determined the renewal requirements for your license, you can register for courses. Each course has an associated credit type; when registering for courses, select courses with credit types that will help to fulfill the renewal requirements for your license.

You must fulfill the course requirements for each of the courses to have them reported.

  • Classroom and webinar course completions are based off of attendance and participation and do not require a completion exam. You must be present for the full duration of the course and be active and attentive throughout to receive credit.
  • Online and Self Study courses are self-paced. You must review the course material and pass the Certification Exam at the end to receive credit.

MONITOR REQUIREMENTS:

Online and self study exams do not require a monitor.

REPORTING METHOD:

Once a course has been completed, the completion must be reported to the state. PreLicenseTraining.com will report the course completions to Prometric.


3. File a Renewal Application

Once you have satisfied the renewal requirements for your license, you can file a renewal application at www.sircon.com.
